The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas, which will result in water supply disruption. This critical maintenance work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.

Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.

Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements 

Residents are advised to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure. Water should be stored in clean, sealed containers. This precaution does not guarantee all residents will have a water disruption, but it aims to ensure they are able to prepare in the event it does occur.

Planned maintenance work will result in water supply disruption to these areas:

Gugulethu

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply to Gugulethu on Saturday, 18 October 2025, from 09:00 until 16:00. This will enable the maintenance team to safely replace the faulty 300mm diameter valve on the water main at the corner of Ny 1 and NY 109 in Gugulethu. Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to minimise the disruption. The area will experience no water during this period.

Water tankers will be placed at the following locations to provide water for domestic use where required:

• Corner of NY 1 and NY 109
• Gugulethu Mall
• Gugulethu SAPS
• 126 Klipfontein Road
• Opposite Fezeka Administrative Offices
• Gugulethu Sports Complex

Delft

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has appointed a contractor to conduct field investigations in the Delft pressure management zone for the existing water supply network. The initial investigations will commence on Monday, 20 October 2025 and the project is expected to run for approximately two months.

The objective of this investigation is to improve the stability of the water supply network and minimise water and pressure losses in the area. The water supply may be interrupted intermittently as work progresses through different sections of the network. Affected residents will be notified in advance. Operational hours are from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays. Planned water disruptions will be communicated weekly to the relevant areas.

The contractor will be conducting a test shut-off from 10:00 until 12:00 on Tuesday, 21 October 2025 to confirm that the pressure zone is completely isolated. The area will experience no water during this period.

Part of Gardens

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has appointed a contractor to conduct a water pipeline replacement project in Higgo Crescent, Summerseat Close, Higgo Avenue and Trek Road, Gardens from Monday, 20 October 2025 until Tuesday, 3 March 2026. Construction will be done using open trench installation, which may result in some noise, temporary traffic disruptions and general inconvenience during the course of the works. Normal working hours will be from 08:00 until 17:00, Monday to Friday. Work may also be carried out on weekends and public holidays. Prior notice will be provided when water supply disruptions are expected to take place.

Part of Sunnydale

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply in parts of Sunnydale on Tuesday, 21 October 2025 from 08:00 until 18:00. The work involves connecting the newly installed 350mm diameter steel water pipeline along Kommetjie Main Road from the Capri Drive junction to the Wood Road junction to the existing water supply infrastructure. The area affected by the shut-off will be the erven fed by the water mains in Chasmay Road, Pokela Road and Lekkerwater Road.

Part of Vredehoek

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply in Bradwell Road between Denholm Road and Florida Road and possibly the immediate surrounds on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, from 09:00 until 18:00, to do a new connection to the local water supply network.

Part of the CBD

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply in Buitengracht Service Road between Whitford and Orphan Street and possibly the immediate surrounds on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, from 09:00 until 18:00, to do a new connection to the local water supply network.

Part of Wynberg

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will do a test shut-off of the water supply to part of Wynberg Main Road from the Maynard Mall to Constantia Main Road and possibly the immediate surrounds on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, from 10:00 until 16:00. This temporary shut will assist the maintenance team to determine the impact when the actual shut-off will be done on the corner of Wynberg Main Road and Egglestone Road and Wynberg Main Road and Langley Road to connect the newly installed pipeline to the existing water supply infrastructure at a date to be determined. This area will experience no water during this period.

Part of Lentegeur and Watergate

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will do a test shut-off of the water supply to part of Lentegeur and Watergate on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, from 09:00 until 13:00. This temporary shut will assist the maintenance team to determine the impact when the actual shut-off will be done on Thursday, 30 October 2025 from 08:00 until 18:00 to accommodate the upgrade of the 300mm diameter water main in Highlands Drive. Candytuft Street and all the roads leading to and from Candytuft Street and possibly immediate surrounds as well as Watergate, will experience low water pressure to no water during these periods. A water tanker will be placed in the area during the actual shut-off on Thursday, 30 October 2025.

Part of Woodstock

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply from Hyde Street to Sir Lowry Road between Searle Street and Russel Street including Chapel Street, Gray Street, St. Phillips Street, Frances Street, Pontac Street, Nelson Street and possibly immediate surrounds on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, from 09:00 until 16:00 and on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, from 09:00 until 16:00. These are test shut-offs to determine the impact for the actual shut-off on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, from 09:00 until 18:00 when a bypass connection will be installed to accommodate the upgrade of the roadways in the area. The area will experience no water during these periods.

Part of Boston

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply to 10th , 11th, 12th and 13th Avenues and possibly the immediate surrounds on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, from 09:00 until 18:00, to install a cross-connection and associated valves on the corner of 12th Avenue and Lincoln Street, Boston.

Part of Constantia

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply in the area bounded by Southern Cross Drive, Brommersvlei Road, Pin Oak Lane and Valley Walk in Constantia on Thursday, 23 October 2025, from 09:00 until 18:00. The work involves connecting of a newly installed water pipeline along Valley Walk Close at the intersections with Valley Walk Close and Valley Walk, Constantia to the existing water supply infrastructure.

Part of Wynberg

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply in part of Wynberg on Thursday, 23 October 2025 from 08:00 until 18:00. The work involves connecting the newly installed water pipeline along Cogill Road and Oak Avenue to the existing water supply infrastructure. The area affected by the shut-off will be Piers Road, Cogill Road, Oak Avenue, Mortimer Road, Devonshire Road and possibly the surrounds in Wynberg.

This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water.

Zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments will be done on the water supply network resulting in water supply disruptions in the following areas:

• Tuesday, 21 October 2025, from 10:00 until 16:00: Kraaifontein, Peerless Park East, Peerless Park West, Scottsville and Eikendal.
• Wednesday, 22 October 2025, from 10:00 until 16:00: Vredekloof, Welgelee, Arauna, Morgenster, St Kilda, Marlborough Park, Brackenfell Industrial and  Okavango Park.

Zero-pressure testing and step-testing are part of the installation process for zone management infrastructure. Tests are done in advance to see if any unmapped inflows need to be considered before installing new infrastructure (such as pressure-reducing valves for pressure management).

In these affected areas, some residents may experience low water pressure while some may have no water during the testing period. Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict which exact areas or streets will experience disruptions. 

Additional zone management investigations will be carried out to ensure that the existing infrastructure is operating effectively. Pressure fluctuations may be experienced, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact as far as possible.

This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy. Managing water pressure more effectively reduces the possibility of pipe bursts and water wastage.

The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience.

What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:

1. Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
2. All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
3. Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
4. For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.

How residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions:

1. Store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance for use during this period.
2. Keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.
